So you're looking at buying a chainsaw? Ever owned one before? A lot of folks haven't and there are a few who wished they never saw one before! But owning and using a chainsaw doesn't have to be a horrible experience. With a little patience and the ability to read and understand safety procedures, most anyone can learn to use a chainsaw safely. They're great power tools that can solve a lot of your wood cutting problems. Whether your cutting the Winter's supply of firewood or just trimming some trees around the yard, a chainsaw can make the job a lot more enjoyable and efficient.

Before you rush out to buy a chain saw, you need to take into account several things.

Gas Powered, Cordless or Electric - Which is the Best Chainsaw For My Needs?

First, what will you be using the chainsaw for? If you just want to trim a few trees around the yard or cut up the occasional fallen limb, then there's no need to buy a huge gas powered chainsaw like the Husqvarna 455 Rancher. The Remington electric chainsaw or the Black & Decker 20 Volt Electric Chainsaw will be all you need.

On the other hand, if you plan on cutting your own firewood or you're in the landscape business, then a gas powered chainsaw like the Husqvarna 455 Ranchor or the 450 will work well. If you just have a little firewood to cut, then take a look at Poulan P3416. It's a 16 inch, 2 cycle gas powered chain saw and it's just about perfect for those who just cut a little bit of wood each year.

If you want portable power without carrying around a gas can or pulling a cord behind you, then take a look at the Black & Decker 20 volt cordless chain saw mentioned above. It uses effecient lithium ion battery packs and you can carry several for extended cutting times. However, I would never think about using such a chainsaw for routine firewood cutting. They're just not designed for heavy, prolonged use. They're great for a camping trip or clearing out brush, but if it's firewood or cutting large trees or limbs, then get a gas powered chainsaw.
