circular sawsCircular saws are often forgotten when talking about portable cutting power. Owning a circular saw is like having a portable miter saw in your hand. Okay, so maybe they do require a little more skill to operate than a fixed based miter saw, but you get the point. I hear so many guys who should know better say "There's no use in owning a circular saw, I have a miter saw". That's rubbish and it just plain shows the ignorance of the person saying that. If that statement was true, then you'd never see circular saws on a construction site or out in the middle of no where!

Truth is, if you don't own at least one good circular saw, you're limiting yourself as to where you can work and what type of work you can do. Sure, there are wheeled frames for mounting miter saws on, but no matter how many wheels you have, you're not going to be carrying your miter saw up and down a ladder!

Types of Circular Saws

There are two basic drive types of circular saws on the market today. Side drive (some call these "sidewinders") and worm drives. The side drive is basically a motor on the left side with a circular saw blade on the right. It's the type most people are familiar with. The Worm Drive circular sawworm drive circular saw is a bit longer in length due to it being driven by a worm gear. If you only use a circular saw every once in a while or you just need to make some rough cuts, then a side drive circular saw will probably do a good job for you. Cheap circular saws are great for putting behind the seat of your pickup or stashed someplace for that occasional use.

On the other hand, if you use your saw every day and use it for accurate cuts or cutting large material such as 4x4 timbers or larger, then the worm drive circular saw is what you're going to want. They're heavy-duty versions meant to take the heavier work load that will destroy light duty side drive circular saws.
