Tips For Buying Bench Grinders
There are two major types of grinders people think of when the subject comes up. Either bench grinders or hand grinders. What you'll be using the grinders for will determine which grinder is best for you and your situations. Grinders are a great tool when it comes to removing and reshaping material. There are grinders that are designed to remove metal and those for wood. Plus everything in between.
Bench Grinders Basics
Bench grinders are usually permanently mounted to a floor stand or to a bench. Hence their name. Most bench grinders are nothing more than an electric motor with shafts at each end that hold grinding wheels, buffing pads or wire wheels.
Another form of bench grinders are belt sanders. These use different types of belts to remove material. You'll see most of these used in woodworking, but knife makers and other metal workers use them as well, especially for detailed work.
On the other end, hand grinders are just what you'd think they would be. Hand held grinders that you hold in your hand and work the material. Don't get hand grinders confused with angle grinders, because they're two different animals! There are small handheld belt grinders and then there are larger ones. I'd personally say the Bosch handheld belt sanders are the most popular because they're easy to use and work with. But the larger angle grinders are often used by professionals whether it be buffing out a car body or grinding a weld down in preparation for making another pass.
Grinders are normally ran off of either 110v electric current. But there are grinders that are wired to run off of 220 volts as well as grinders than run off of air. This is an important consideration you need to remember when buying a grinder. You don't want to get home with your grinder and find out it's a 220V grinder and you have no 220V outlet!
If you don't have at least one type of grinder in your shop, then you're really missing out!
