How To Choose The Best Orbital Sanders

Orbital Sandershave save countless hands from the harsh realities of regular sandpaper. But just as they can be a huge benefit and time saver, if used improperly they can ruin a piece of work, or a body part, pretty quick.

Most tool manufacturers such as Dewalt, Hitachi, Bosch, Makita, Milwaukee, Porter Cable and Black & Decker make orbital sanders along with other companies. I've used a lot of different brands over the years and I can tell you that they all have their pluses and minuses. Like many things in life, the "best orbital sander" on the market is subjective and every woodworker has their views on what constitutes the best orbital sander, or even power tools for that matter!

Most popular models of orbital sanders will start in the 3 amp range with a 5 inch disc. For most of my purposes, this is pretty much a light weight power tool set up. If I'm going to be using a 5 inch orbital sander, I want as much power as I can get. This usually means something in the 5 to 6 amp range. I'm not patient and if I get into a big sanding job, I want the power to finish as quick as possible without ruining my work. If I use a less powerful sander, I tend to get rough with it trying to force it to do more work than it's capable of.

You can also find orbital sanders in the 6 inch range. While most sanders are electric or cordless models, you can also find larger models that are air powered.
