What To Look For When Buying A Portable Table Saw
For years I got by without a table saw. And looking back, a lot of my work reflected it! I'll be the first to say that I'm not a natural wood worker. I'm envious of people like Norm Abrams who can shuck out Masterpieces of woodworking at will. I don't understand how they do it!!
But one thing I have learned, good tools make creating functional wooden items a lot easier! I used to believe in the myth that "tools don't make a woodworker". That's bunk! Good tools in the hands a Noob can do wonderous things! I should know.
I've also learned that buying a cheap table saw is not going to cut the mustard so to speak. You might as well have you stuff laying across saw horses or a tailgate and be cutting it with a circular saw! A worn out or cheaply made table saw is not your friend at all and your work can suffer for it.
A few years ago I finally sucked it up and bought a new Bosch 4100-09Table Saw (Click here to read reviews on the Bosch 4100-09), the one on the collapsible wheeled saw stand. It was an Eureka moment! Suddenly my cuts became straight and my pieces fit tight, not slightly crooked with gaps. Friends and family, especially my Wife, suddenly started muttering "oohs" and "Awwws". Sounds I'd never heard from them before.
So if you're on the fence about buying a table saw, don't be. But buy a good one and don't try and cut corners. If you have a permanent shop, then get the best table saw you can. Cut corners elsewhere but not on the table saw itself. If you're like me and you may need your table saw away from your home, then the obvious choice is a portable table saw. I'd highly recommend a wheeled collapsible saw stand as well. This is one of the biggest reasons I bought the Bosch 4100 portable table saw mentioned above. It's big enough to do my woodworking projects at home, but the collapsible work station allows me to roll it any where and it fits nice and flat in the back of my truck. You'll thank me later!
