The purpose of the base is to give it a stable platform that helps to guide it as it does the cutting. A Fixed base holds the bit locked at a certain height or depth while it cuts. The Plunge base allows the user to dive straight down into the cut while making adjustments to the height of the bit at the same time.
The motor of the machine is rated by horsepower. The higher the rating, the more power in the motor. A 1½ horsepower machine is adequate for most any job, but they come as high as 4 horsepower. There are also routers that allow the user to adjust their speed. They are known as variable speed routers. Being able to lower its speed creates the opportunity to use bits with larger diameters. These variable speed routers come in designs that offer a soft start feature. This gives the machine to build up to speed level gradually giving the user more control over the machine as the speed increases.

For this reason, it can be changed from a fixed based to a plunge router simply by purchasing a different base. This machine eliminates the need to purchase two different types of routers. A fixed base requires the user to unlock the base from the motor. This is when the depth of the bit must be adjusted and the lock secured to hold the depth in place. Removing the base also permits changing the bits. This router is best used for templates and beading. The plunge base permits an up and down movement of the motor along two guides. Because the motor is locked on the base, the depth of the bit is controlled with a level lock.

The most important benefit of the plunge router over the fixed base is it allows the motor to gradually increase in speed prior to the cut being made. The plunge base allows cuts to be made in the center of the stock. Certain types of cuts as mortises and dadoes are best made using a plunge style. This is because the bit can be raised out of the cut once the target point is achieved.

When considering buying a router, determine the uses planned for it. The specific jobs to be done determines the choice of types. Also to be considered in the choice of types, is a variable router.
